Rosaline Montague and Joanna Capulet have lived their whole lives in the public eye, the face of modern-day politics. As daughters of competing congressional candidates, the star-crossed Ro and Jo are heirs to a bitter rivalry that howls for their allegiance. Dividing lines split the community and turn the students of Verona High School against one another, while Ro and Jo try to decide for themselves what they believe, who they trust, and how much should be sacrificed for love.
Using Romeo and Juliet as a container to explore their own experiences, the students of Downstage Center Productions share a youth perspective of growing up in a time of historic polarization, misinformation, and upheaval. The result is an original, queer-centric, female-driven, playful-yet-passionate take on a classic cautionary tale that reminds us that when the grown-ups can’t get along, it’s the youth who ultimately pay the price.
