The Misadventures of Missy Black: A Pirate Play chronicles the life of a young woman who grows up to be a legendary pirate queen. Missy is the daughter of a pair of common criminals who longs to escape her parents’ house, only finding solace in her close friendship with Danforth Collins, the son of the Connecticut governor. When she is forced by her parents into marriage to Jericho Black (a pirate captain and gentleman), she adapts well to her new sea-faring life – until Jericho’s conniving quartermaster convinces the crew to mutiny, believing having a woman aboard is bad luck and the only course is to drown the newlyweds. What follows is the tale of Missy’s rise to become a globally feared and renowned pirate queen, gathering her own crew of misfits, sailing around the world making allies and enemies and seeking vengeance on that murderous crew – all while trying to keep her friendship with Danforth, who is following his own ambitions in New Haven and beyond, afloat.
