Trey and Cristal, genetically engineered father and daughter, are struggling to understand each other under the regime of a ruling group called the Prime, a government body that uses genetic engineering to create a better world. Destroyed by war, Earth has become a radioactive wasteland, but most survivors outside the Prime refuse to be enhanced by their invasive genetic techniques. Trey has received a replacement wife, a Radiant Mate that is an exact copy of his deceased wife and uses the same name. Although Cly appears harmless, she seems to know things beyond her classification, as she awaits the encoded imprint of Trey’s deceased wife’s brain. And Trey? His enhanced DNA is not working as predicted, so attached to his dead wife he can barely function, reducing him from genius to has-been in his own lifetime. His daughter is no help. Cristal, secretly being groomed for a leadership position, is humming along as a shining example of Prime genetics. This is Masque Alfresco’s sixth production for Fertile Ground, with Artistic Director Fayra Teeters at the helm as producer/director, and starring professional actor Kenneth Dembo as Trey.
